To celebrate the launch of the Portuguese edition of Psychonauts: Drugs and the Making of the Modern Mind (Yale University Press, 2024; translated to Portuguese as Psiconautas: as drogas e a formação da mente moderna, Livros Zigurate, 2024), Gama Glória joins the publisher Zigurate and Âmbito Cultural in welcoming the author Mike Jay to Lisbon.
Psychonauts explores the history of drug experimentation, focusing on pioneering figures in the Western arts and sciences whose visionary work was likely shaped by their use of psychoactive substances to explore consciousness.
João Taborda da Gama and Mike Jay will discuss the book in a broad-ranging conversation about psychoactive substances in Western history and culture at Âmbito Cultural do El Corte Inglês at 18:30 on Tuesday 10 December. The conversation will be in English. Attendance is open and free of charge.
Jay is a world-renowned British journalist, historian, and author whose interdisciplinary work on the cultural history of drugs has contributed to a paradigm shift over the last three decades. His earlier books include High Society: Mind-Altering Drugs in History and Culture (Thames & Hudson, 2010) and Mescaline: A Global History of the First Psychedelic (Yale University Press, 2019), and he has curated exhibitions on art and drug culture, including most notably, “High Society” at the Wellcome Collection in London in 2010.
João Gama advises governments, NGOs, and corporations on the uses of controlled substances (with focus on cannabis and psychedelics) in medical, spiritual, and recreational contexts.
